Jerome R. Smith, Jr., J.D.
Patent Attorney

Jerome holds a B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University and a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law. He is currently enrolled in courses for an M.S. in Microbiology from Thomas Jefferson University.
Prior to law school, Jerome served as a U.S. Patent Examiner in the Surgery and Medical Device arts. Jerome began his legal career in Chicago, and later worked with prominent law firms in Minneapolis, then moving to Israel. In Israel, Jerome worked in high technology, where he drafted some of the pioneering patents in Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and packet-switched networks. He also worked with numerous cutting-edge medical devices as well as robotics and semiconductors.
Upon returning to the United States in 2001, Jerome drafted and prosecuted patents in the Internet, Software and e-Commerce arts, to address the needs of his growing client base. He has traveled internationally, to service the needs of his clients, as well as develop business throughout Europe, Israel and Asia.
In Kansas City in 2005, Jerome was voted into the listing of Super Lawyers® for Intellectual Property for Missouri and Kansas. He continues to lecture and present, both in the U.S. and internationally, on leading topics in Intellectual Property Law including Bilski and Software/Business Method Patents, Design Patents, Obviousness Analysis as viewed through KSR v. Teleflex, and on producing effective drawings for patent applications. He has been published in Law360.com as well as AtlantaIPLaw.com.
Immediately before returning in 2009 to Eastern Pennsylvania where he grew up, Jerome practiced with Lathrop & Gage in Kansas City, in their Overland Park, KS office. He is admitted to practice law in Illinois, Minnesota and Kansas, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
